So apparently, according to MSN #EdinburghChristmasMarket is the best #ChristmasMarket in the UK. I was lucky enough to get there at just the right time on my recent trip with @Expedia staying at The Balmoral Hotel. It is certainly stunning -that walk along Princes Street Gardens is beautiful at any time of the year, but lit up with all the Christmas Stalls it becomes quite magical. And, it's very well managed - there's great spaces for kids - rides and even a #ChristmasTree Maze - and eateries plus designated areas for drinking alcohol. And, thanks to the layout it doesn't feel packed. I'd definitely go back again - but then I #LoveEdinburgh ! Now I just want to go back! Enjoying the Launch of the festival terrace at @angler_restaurant- Running until December 23rd, the festive terrace has been designed in partnership with Laurent Perrier, and takes inspiration from the decadence of late 19th-Century Russia. It's rather special when things look just as stunning from the Back as from the front isn't it? In #Cambridge there's a pretty part of the City, known as #TheBacks where you can walk along the back of the colleges. Here, the backs of the colleges meet the #RiverCam - with lush green grass - an area that was historically used for grazing livestock and growing fruit. I have to admit that the last time I was there, over thirty years ago was with a group of friends who were students at #Cambridge. We had borrowed a couple of punts between about ten of us and managed somehow to sink one. Rather than lose the cash deposit we'd left, we punted up into The Backs and abandoned punt... In my view it's not worth getting stressed over #Christmas cooking when you are in London and there are so many wonderful things to eat on your doorstep - @paul_bakeryuk have a whole selection of wonderful Buches de Noel, Festive Cakes, Mince Pies and Macarons for #Christmas. I was lucky enough to be sent a few samples to feast on the other day - including this stunning slice of chocolate cake on a genoise sponge. I'm planning on treating myself over the #Festive season and buying rather than making #desserts. Why bother trying to surpass perfection? Isn't it beautiful - I enjoyed this with a glass of #Champagne - the perfect way to end a meal - or why not just indulge yourself and eat a slice with a good espresso? At @Freakscene it was so good we bought the book! @FreaksceneLDN is #ScottHallsworth 's latest popup in #Farringdon. You can expect stunning cocktails, excellent Sake and some quirky dishes including #blackcod tacos and #Sashimi #Pizza with truffle ponzu. All definitely worth trying and nothing over £12 a portion. Where in the World would you be happy to live? For me, other than London, one city in the UK stands out - that is #Edinburgh. All my feelings were confirmed on my recent trip to the #HistoricHotel @TheBalmoral - I stayed in a room with a view of#EdinburghCastle and this stunning sunset was my reward on the first night. The last time I was at #TheBalmoral was for a friend's wedding - and I was truly impressed on my return. It's all been refurbished since then and my room was charmingly decorated with William Morris patterns. And then there's that view. The hotel provided binoculars to make sure I could make the most of it. Now I just want to go back! The Langham Hotel has just launched their #FestiveTea -a #Christmas #AfternoonTea spectacular. This pretty pastry is @Langham_London 's ' Eternally Pistachio - a tiny, perfect wreath of crunchy choux topped with pistachio and cranberries and filled with a pistachio cream and cranberry jelly. It did taste sublime. There were four other delicious miniature pastries and it was really hard to pick a favourite. I was genuinely impressed with the tea - a lovely glass of @PerrierJouet Blason Rose Champagne and then sandwiches, savouries, scones pastries - and of course, some mince pies to finish the afternoon, all in the #luxurious surroundings of the #PalmCourt at the #LanghamHotel. This is the Chocolate Creamaux with caramel and with a naughty portion of Armagnac Ice Cream as a swap for the Milk Ice Cream on the menu at #Cambium - the three AA rosette fine dining restaurant which is part of @careysmanor_senspa - a #NewForest hotel and spa where I spent a night last week. It was my friend's dessert not mine - though I did get a dollop of the wonderful #Armagnac and prune ice cream to go with my own dessert of Treacle Tart. I'm not sure what part of #Careysmanor deserves more attention - the hotel was charming and comfortable, the food fantastic and the spa impeccably designed and a lovely place to spend a happy afternoon. I wanted to stay longer - always a good sign. The view from the South Bank at night is always stunning. I love the colours reflecting off the #Thames at #Bankside near Oxo Tower. #London is a city that never ceases to charm me - whether it is the scruffy wasteland of #Walworth or the prim and pristine South Kensington. I wish a river view home was within my budget. It's a while since I've had such a delicious #Japanese meal. @tsunami_restaurants in #Clapham is tucked away behind Clapham North Station - and having invited my friend (and #Japanesefood aficionado) @kaveyf to join me for dinner, I was slightly apprehensive. I really shouldn't have been. Dish after dish of delicious food appeared from the kitchen including this stunning steamed seabass in sake & soy ponzu. Just in case you didn't believe me - here's #NorthcoteManor in #Devon later that morning. It is a traditional English Country House hotel that I suspect hasn't changed too much since it first opened as such in 1972. The 'new' manor house was built in 1716, although there's a Victorian wing to the North East, added later. Remains of the original building can still be seen in the grounds and there are Parish records dating back to 1592. there's also a mention of the manor as it was in 1103 - in the reign of King Henry I in the papers of a previous owner, the Right Honourable Sir Stafford Northcote who died in the late 1800s. It's had many owners including Richard Babbage (I believe an ancestor of Charles Babbage) and Colonel Gracey who built the Northern Indian railway system. The motto over the door reads 'I follow the light'. I was particularly impressed by the friendly service, the pristine rooms and the excellent food - the hotel is managed by the head chef and I'm truly amazed by the close-knit supportive team who host @NorthcoteManor. The food, which has a two AA rosette listing, was unexpectedly excellent and in my book deserves its third rosette sooner rather than later. I was a little sad, driving from London to #NorthcoteManor in Devon through the pouring rain. While #EnglishCountryHotel stays are always lovely, it's much nicer if the sun comes out. Well, I needn't have worried. The next morning I awoke to a beautiful #sunrise through the window of my suite @northcotemanor - and then a splendid breakfast to complement the dinner from the night before.
