You could be forgiven for thinking this is somewhere in Italy or Greece. In fact, the Temple of Diana is in Evora, Portugal. The temple is part of the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It's actually quite remarkable that so much of the temple has survived. Built around the first century AD in honour of Emperor Augustus, it was partly destroyed in the 5th century by invading Germanic tribes. Then in the 14th century parts of the temple were used to build a new castle. That was turned into a butcher's shop (!) from the 14th century till 1836. Other things to look out for in Evora include a stunning Cathedral with amazing rooftop panoramic views across the Alentejo and the famous Chapel of Bones. More about my trip to the Alentejo with @tapairportugal #tapairportugal as part of the airline's annual awards. I was delighted to join a group of award winning international travel agents exploring more of the #Alentejo wine route before celebrating in style in #Lisbon. @VisitPortugal⁣ #VisitAlentejo⁣ #tapportugal ⁣ #Alentejo⁣ #VisitPortugal #travelblogger #instatbn #writetotravel #instapassport #postcardsfromtheworld #guardiantravelsnaps #ttot #tbin #travelblog #bbctravel #secretplaces
